North Dakota’s Democrat Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is a leading contender for Secretary of Agriculture in President-Elect Donald Trump’s administration, a transition source tells Politico.
Heitkamp serves on Senate Agriculture Committee with Sen. John Thune (R-SD) and Sen. John Hoven (R-ND).
If selected, she’d have to be confirmed by the Senate which could begin as early as Jan. 3, 2017. A special election would then have to be held for Heitkamp’s seat in North Dakota. That would likely flip her seat to Republican, which would bolster the GOP’s lead in the upper chamber of Congress.
Heitkamp’s office and Trump’s transition team did not respond to requests for comment to Politico.
She was seen at Trump Tower on Dec. 2.
