Jay Williams is the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate.
He grew up on a farm near Gettysburg, SD according to his campaign’s website.
He attended the University of Wisconsin on a Navy scholarship. There he met his wife Carol and moved back to Yankton, SD.
Wiliams has served in the U.S. Navy and Peace Corps.
He started a small business in Yankton called Excelltech Inc. and has served on the school board.
Williams’ senate bid marks a big change for South Dakota Democrats who failed to field a candidate when Thune first ran for re-election in 2010.
“I think it was a huge mistake not to do it six years ago and I think we’re correcting it now,” Williams said in a February interview with KELO-TV. You can read more about Williams’ stances on the issues on his campaign website.
