Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD) is being considered by President-Elect Donald Trump to be Secretary of Agriculture, The New York Times reported Monday afternoon.

“It’s an honor to be considered by President-elect Trump to join his administration,” Noem said in a statement to KELOLAND News.

Her office didn’t confirm any meeting between Trump and South Dakota’s at-large U.S. Representative.

“The opportunities we have to invoke genuine change under the next administration are incredible, but to realize them fully, we must have strong leaders who understand agriculture and life in rural communities throughout each branch of government,” Noem said.

However, her statement appears to say she’ll be staying in Congress.

“I’m convinced the best way for me to help President Trump succeed while also producing the greatest impact for South Dakota is to serve out my two-year term in the House of Representatives,” Noem said.

The Congresswoman previously announced her bid for the 2018 South Dakota Gubernatorial Election in November.

If elected, Noem would be the first female Governor of South Dakota.

This weekend, Politico reported North Dakota’s Democrat Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is a leading contender for Secretary of Agriculture.

KELOLAND News reached out to the Presidential Transition Team and has yet to receive a response.

Full statement from Noem:

“It’s an honor to be considered by President-elect Trump to join his administration. The opportunities we have to invoke genuine change under the next administration are incredible, but to realize them fully, we must have strong leaders who understand agriculture and life in rural communities throughout each branch of government. As we tackle tax reform, the 2018 Farm Bill, the repeal and replacement of Obamacare, and regulatory relief efforts, I’m convinced the best way for me to help President Trump succeed while also producing the greatest impact for South Dakota is to serve out my two-year term in the House of Representatives. I’m excited about the work we will be doing alongside the Trump administration and wholeheartedly look forward to implementing policies that secure the American Dream for all.”
