Rep. Chuck Turbiville died Saturday at his home in Deadwood, of apparent stroke. KELOLAND’s Bob Mercer reports praise rolled in quickly for Tubiville, who is also the mayor of Deadwood.
Turbiville was up for re-election in November and his name will still appear on the ballot in District 31, Governor Dennis Daugaard’s office announced.
There are two open seats for the House of Representatives in District 31. Incumbent Rep. Timothy Johns (R-Lead), Wyatt Osthus (D-Spearfish) and Naveen Malik (D-Spearfish) are all running.
Malik released a statement on Facebook.
She also suspended campaigning for Sunday.
According to the governor’s office, if Turbiville is reelected, the newly-elected governor will appoint a replacement to serve in the State House during 2019 and 2020.
